With funding from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), IPM and the World Health Organization (WHO) hosted the first annual Microbicide Access Forum on July 2-3, 2007 in Nairobi, Kenya. The Forum brought together more than 45 government representatives, program implementers, advocates, social researchers and clinicians from the HIV/AIDS and reproductive health fields to discuss approaches to microbicide introduction and delivery scale up.
Experiences of past and current technology introductions were drawn on and the evolving context of HIV/AIDS programs to which microbicides may be added was discussed. The Forum focused on identifying elements of initial introduction programs and the key needs and decision points for policy makers in countries that may be the first to introduce microbicides.
The Microbicide Access Forum will be an annual event that provides an opportunity for stakeholders to share information and discuss timely issues and new evidence that can inform the future introduction and use of microbicides.
